Mandatory Safety Signage

Sourcing and supply of all legally required Health & Safety signage for your workplace — ensuring compliance with OHS Act obligations and applicable South African standards.

Overview

What This Service Covers

Health & Safety signage is a legal requirement, not an optional extra. The OHS Act and applicable regulations require employers to display specific signage to warn of hazards, direct emergency responses and communicate safety procedures throughout the workplace. Mygacare assesses your signage requirements, sources compliant signs meeting the relevant SANS standards, and ensures every facility is correctly signed for compliance and worker safety.

Scope of Work

  • Workplace signage audit — identifying missing, damaged or non-compliant signs
  • Mandatory signage requirements mapped to your workplace hazards and layout
  • Sourcing of SANS 1186 and SANS ISO 11684 compliant safety signage
  • Emergency escape route and evacuation signs for all facilities
  • Prohibition, warning, mandatory and fire equipment signage
  • Signage placement guidance and installation support
  • Signage register for ongoing maintenance and replacement tracking

Legislative Relevance

  • OHS Act 85 of 1993 — employer duty to maintain a safe and healthy workplace
  • General Safety Regulations — requirements for safety signs and notices
  • SANS 1186: Symbolic safety signs and SANS ISO 11684 (machinery safety signs)
  • National Building Regulations and Building Standards Act — emergency signage requirements

Who This Is For

  • Any employer required to display Health & Safety signage under the OHS Act
  • Businesses moving into new premises or refurbishing existing facilities
  • Organisations that have received audit findings related to missing or non-compliant signage
  • Workplaces across any industry — warehouses, factories, offices, retail and hospitality
FAQs

Safety Signage — FAQs

What safety signs are legally required in my workplace?

Mandatory signage varies by workplace type and the hazards present — but at minimum includes emergency evacuation signs, first aid location indicators, fire equipment markers and hazard warnings relevant to your operations. Mygacare conducts a site assessment to identify exactly what is required for your facility.

Do my existing signs meet SANS standards?

Not all commercially available signs meet the SANS 1186 or ISO standards required under South African legislation. A signage audit will identify any non-compliant, faded or incorrectly placed signs — and we can source replacements that fully comply with the relevant standards.

How often should workplace signage be reviewed?

Signage should be reviewed whenever there are changes to the workplace layout, new hazards are introduced, or during any H&S audit. We recommend an annual signage inspection as part of your overall compliance maintenance programme.
